John McCain Ratifies 1992 Dissolution of Czechoslovakia
With the passage of Constitution Act 542 on November 25 of 1992, the Federal Assembly of Czechoslovakia agreed to a peaceful separation, effective December 31 of that year, of its nation into two independent republics: the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Many called it the Velvet Divorce. John McCain, however, called it nonsense and refused to acknowledge it. Instead, over the following 15 years the two states floundered and strained for recognition as John McCain stubbornly insisted on referring to Czechoslovakia solely. That is until this historic day, July 22, 2008, when John McCain formally recognized the two sovereign nations of The Czech Republic and Slovakia, finally ratifying a separation 15 years in the making. "The Czech Republic and Slovakia split years ago," McCain pronounced. "The fact is, it's the Czech Republic." Huzzah!
Congratulations to the citizens of both nations on your newfound independence.
