TPMtv: Dana Milbank, We Salute You
All it took to set off a full 24 hours of cable news hysteria was one quote that the Washington Post's Dana Milbank attributed to Barack Obama - secondhand, unsourced, out of context, and eventually widely disputed. Nice work, everybody.

While examining this non-essential post it brought into the light the issue of race being put into the campaign, I have come to note that on a subliminal level McCain has been playing that card for a little while. McCain has not been alone in his effort. The Mass Media's talking heads (MSM) has aided him in this endeavor. You have people like Pat Buchanan who turn up on practically all of MSNBC news shows (with the exception of Keith Olbermann) asking the question: is Obama "one of us." Who this "us" refers to is always undefined so one can only use their imagination. Does Pat mean: un-human, un-American, un-elitist, un-wealthy, un-unprivileged, un-right-color? Nevertheless, Pat is not alone in this endeavor. You have Tucker who is forever spouting how arrogant Obama is, even while he ascertain that who ever runs for president has to be arrogant. Of course he then counterpoints that with Obama being too arrogant. But Pat nor Tucker is alone. You have other talking heads discussing if Obama is uppity, arrogant, or presumptuous. If you are a Black American those words have a particular meaning and none of them are praising. They inherently mean, to a Black American, that Black people need to learn their place and stop trying to make it to the big house. In the MSM quest to show they are above the fray they have now become insensitive to Black Americans' history of being insulted in this same manner by white slave owners, the KKK and racist. They can forget that any attempts of having a black pundit saying "it is not about race" will change the bulk of Black Americas opinion of their lack of sensitivity. Those descriptors are insulting and demeaning; especially, since Obama has done nothing different than McCain with the exception that he did it better and he is Black.
Granted, I can truly understand why McCain would give no thought to offending Black Americans especially since Obama currently holds over 90% of the black American vote and McCain holds only a single digit percent. McCain has smartly surmised that he does not need to play nice to this group of American people. But that does not excuse the MSM from skewing this race with their constant lack of examination of McCain; but continuous chatter of pushing the image that there is some justification to McCain's (race) baiting and insults towards Obama. The MSM lack of doing their job is an insult to the intelligence of the American people and pandering to every right wing talking point is getting stupid. They are well aware that most of what McCain has either said or done should be examined under the same microscope that they subject Obama to.

Nice job of assembling all the swill. You must have a strong stomach to be able to do this.
And thank God for Rachel Maddow! At least she called B.S. and refused to play along.

Speaking of race...It just occurred to me that Trent Lott came out and admitted (southern strategy aside)he was wrong about Martin Luther King Jr., before John McCain did. Hope that comes up during his meeting with the Urban League today!

It is sad that this is all they have to talk about. I have great empathy for Barack Obama. He has been my choice from day one when he entered the race for President. I am praying that the American people see throught all the crap. I am really disappointed in Harold Ford denying that McCains ad was just like what they pulled on him in Tenn. He is the wus in his allegiance to the Dem party. But it will get worse. I lobe Obama's humor in all of this, but it must be wearing on his psycie.

Oh, that clip gave me a migraine. The breathless pundits salivating while criticizing Obama.
The repetition, the lack of verbal originality by these incompetent people, all spitting out the same words, "arrogant" "presumptive." Especially Scarboro [sic] in whose congressional office an intern...I won't go there this morning.
But up against all the bitter tv buffoons along comes Rachel Madow. Thank the gods for her!
(I am so glad I only get basic cable.)

Just like sharks in the water, the MSM feeds off in frenzied style with the slightest hint of blood even if it turns out to be nothing more than a mistake. Too bad we don't have a rewind button.

I know, right? I'd be laughing if it weren't so depressing.

Faaaaaaaaaantastic!
If you tried to submit a script for a TV show about political reporters where the characters were that rancorous and petty I bet you would get laughed out of Hollywood. The breathless pettiness was remarkable. 5 stars.
Bravo, TV media!

Damnit. Replace "petty" above with "spiteful."

I grew up in the Ozarks and there were NO black people in my neighborhood. There was a term that has disappeared (thankfully) since I was a small boy that describes the media's attitude toward Obama. I heard it from my great-grandfather (now dead 30 years). The term was "HOUSE N*&^*R". It was a throwback to the days of slavery, when there were slaves that worked the field and the best slaves got to work inside the main house of the plantation. They were often considered "uppity" because of thier supposed elevated status.
The main stream media seems to have decided to treat Sen. Obama as a "House Ni*&%r". If he says anything, it is viewed not so much as coming from a political candidate but as coming from a black man who happens to be running for president.
They would deny this. But as someone who grew up in an environment that considered these thoughts to be acceptable (even if they're not), I RECOGNIZE THE COMMENTS FOR WHAT THEY ARE.
If you disagree with me, please let me know why all the coverage on this story (unsubstantiated hearsay that was later disputed by other people who actually were in the room) was given and no one called John McCain out for running ads referring to PRESIDENT MCCAIN (God help us).

I follow political news, but isn't it the job of a political pundit to follow the news? Why is it that I frequently know more about a story than anyone except Rachael? Does no one else but she and I follow the news? Or are these guys ignoring the stories that contradict the pov that they want to present. TPM should run a contest on whether Buchanan or Scarborough is worse about doing that. Perhaps we could even have a "mis-stater of the day" poll on TPM. Should Dana Perino be excluded because it's her job?

I totally agree with you.
When we first started hearing the term "elite" from the Clinton gang, it was clear to me that the word was a thinly veiled substitute for "uppity."
While I believe the Country as a whole has become less racist over the last few decades, it doesn't take much to trigger a brand new rise in racial hatred. We've seen it happen between religions and nw we're seeing it between races. In part, the rise of racial intolerance can be traced to economic strife, but the directed hatred is more the work of those whose voices are heard in the Media. History has taught us that it's a short jump from mass intolerance to holocaust - and not just in Africa. We've witnessed these terrible acts in "civilized" industrial Western countries like Germany, Japan and Yugoslavia.

well because the media IS racist. when a white man does it, it's ok. but when an aa man does it, he's not minding his place.

I blame the media for George Bush's two terms and the Iraq war. They should be ashame of themselves, they continue to distroy this country with lies and prapaganda. Murdoch is not the only neo-con trying to influence this election with the media support.

What I find REALLY depressing is the Obama forces being thoroughly unable and unwilling to reframe, to turn the camera back onto McCain. This is deadly, as Dudakis, Gore and Kerry learned at their own turns at bat.

Keith Olbermann said tonight that Dana won't be returning to "Countdown" and that he has gone to another network. When I switched to CNN during an ad, lo and behold, Dana was there!
