Gonna Fly Nooooow, Flying High Nooooow

Earlier today TPMtv posted some videos that contained the theme music from Rocky.

Which is just enough of a news peg for TPMtv to post this video that also contains the theme music from Rocky. TPMtv loves news pegs!

Hat tip to A-Sully.

"Sturgis, Rev Your Engines!"

Meghan McCain, please forgive TPMtv. It simply had no choice but to steal your headline verbatim, as it is impossible to improve upon it in any way.

Many of you may remember John McCain's delightful trip to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota earlier this month, during which he offered up wife Cindy as a participant in the Miss Buffalo Chip Beauty Pageant / "Show Us Your Boobs!" Contest, and even had a few moments that made it into our Dazed and Confused and Bonus Nonsense highlight reels.

But the fun doesn't stop there, people, no sir it doesn't. Daughter, Columbia graduate, and blogger - excuse me, blogette - Meghan McCain has posted a video diary of all the fun and frivolity of the McCain campaign Sturgis experience:

Bacevich on Moyers

Retired Army Colonel and foreign affairs expert Andrew J. Bacevich will be interviewed by Bill Moyers tonight at 9 PM on PBS. Josh has more background on Bacevich. Here are some advanced excerpts of the interview:

Just a Man and His Will to Surviiiiive

A couple days ago John McCain entered a campaign event in York, Pennsylvania (the same event at which Joe Lieberman uttered his infamous "put the country first" remarks) to the theme music from Rocky:

Which is just enough of a news peg for TPMtv to post this new video, presumably from the creator(s) of Baracky: Baracky II!

[Ed. note: As its objectivity and sterling journalistic integrity of course prevent it from endorsing the pretty clear editorial position of the above video, TPMtv posts this merely as a huge, huge fan of Rocky movies.]

CNN: Obama, Anti-Christ - DISCUSS.

Last night on CNN's Election Center program, host Campbell Brown and her panel of guests tackled perhaps the most important question one can ask when deciding which candidate to vote for to be the next president of the United States of America: is that candidate... the anti-Christ?

[Ed. note: TPMtv fully acknowledges that some of the clips in this video were taken slightly out of context, but they were all from the same eight-or-so-minute segment. Consider it an impressionistic representation of what TPMtv took away from the viewing. You can read the actual transcript here. Special thanks to TPM reader DC for the tip on this one.]

TPMtv: A Chat with Alex Gibney

Abramoff... Norquist... Reed... LUNDGREN.

He's a human killing machine. Taught to stalk. Trained to kill. Programmed to destroy. He's played by their rules... Until now: the Jack Abramoff story.

Ok, that was actually the tagline to the Abramoff-produced 1989 action thrill-ride Red Scorpion. That's just one bit of color touched on in the new Abramoff movie being produced by Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side). It's not expected to be released until 2009, but TPMtv got a sneak peak last month in Austin, where Gibney was previewing the film at Netroots Nation. We got a chance to talk with Gibney about Jack, the inspiration for his inspiring corruption, and the novel approach Gibney is taking to marketing the upcoming film:

Condoleezza Rice Talks Tough to Russia

In the Andrew Sullivan post Josh linked to this morning Sullivan notes the harsh words Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice delivered to Russia yesterday:
This is not 1968 and the invasion of Czechoslovakia, where Russia can threaten its neighbors, occupy a capital, overthrow a government and get away with it. Things have changed.
TPMtv actually youtubed the video yesterday but forgot to post it. Here it is:

Stephanopoulos: War in Georgia Helps McCain

ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent George Stephanopoulos offered some really, really unique and thought-provoking and otherwise exactly correct analysis on Good Morning America this morning: the war in Georgia helps John McCain because DUH John McCain is the foreign policy expert:

Saakashvili: I Talk with McCain Several Times Daily

This feels even more wrong than merely quoting:

TPMtv: A Chat with Van Jones

The closing keynote speaker of the Netroots Nation convention in Austin last month was environmental and social justice activist Van Jones. Following his Sunday morning speech TPMtv caught up with Mr. Jones and asked him about the perception of the environmental movement in the black community and how to alter that perception for the better in creating a full-blown eco-populist movement:

Howard Fineman Rides the Curve

Ahh, the curve.

So we've got David Broder saying if only Obama had agreed to those townhalls that McCain wanted then the tone of the campaign wouldn't be so negative (viewable at the very end of our most recent Sunday Show Roundup), before that a trio of pundits arguing that McCain simply couldn't have any idea what kind of tactics are actually being employed in his campaign, and now here's Newsweek and NBC correspondent Howard Fineman, last night on MSNBC's Countdown, talking about the implications of Joe Lieberman's "country first" comments from yesterday: "I still don't think if you said to McCain flat-out, 'Do you approve of that kind of message,' that he would necessarily agree with it or support it."

It looks like Fineman missed this tidbit posted by Election Central earlier in the evening:

McCain Campaign Officially Endorses Lieberman's Claim That Obama Hasn't "Put Country First"

Funny story: at the start of last night's show, Countdown host Keith Olbermann actually name-dropped Talking Points Memo, citing that very McCain campaign e-mail Election Central reported on. Good to know that someone is reading!

Hannity on McCain's Adultery: He Was a POW!

Normally TPMtv doesn't concern itself much with churlish Fox News anchor Sean Hannity, but this clip from last night's Hannity & Colmes is too funny to pass up:

Something About This Feels Wrong

President of Georgia quotes John McCain from just earlier today:

McCain: Georgia = 1980 USA Hockey Team

Sticking with the Olympics theme of this week, albeit implicitly, here's John McCain giving an inspirational speech about the crisis in Georgia:

TPMtv: A Chat with Don Siegelman

Free on bail while his appeal is pending, former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman was in Austin last month for Netroots Nation. TPMtv got a chance to ask him about the various investigations into allegations that his prosecution for public corruption was politically motivated -- and Karl Rove's alleged role:

Going Straight to the Expert

Now in the full throes of its temporary new news threshold, TPMtv brings you this critically important breaking programming update from Fox News:

Clearly one of those dark Fox News in-jokes cooked up by the producers to amuse themselves. TPMtv sees no reason why we can't all laugh along.

Tim Pawlenty is Kind of Awkward

It's the dead of August, Barack Obama is on vacation on some crazy Afro-Venusian Island of the Quantum Beyond, and MSNBC is running nothing but Olympics. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to TPMtv's temporary new news threshold: potential McCain VP pick Tim Pawlenty made a weird and kind of awkward joke on Fox & Friends this morning!!!

TPMtv: Sunday Show Roundup: August Doldrums

Obama supporter Bill Richardson floats a new "Washington celebrity" line against McCain, McCain campaign manager Rick Davis attempts to defend his own lobbying record, and some quintessential old Washington pundit flummery. Sigh, let's be honest: it was a slow day for the Sunday Show Roundup ...
