It's Official: TPMtv Has Gone From Contempt to Sympathy
For the first time since Sarah Palin was announced as John McCain's vice presidential running mate, TPMtv today felt a fleeting but unmistakable pang of sympathy for the Alaska governor. It came at approximately 3:15 PM Eastern Standard Time when TPMtv viewed this portion of the second night of Katie Couric's interview of Palin on the CBS Evening News:
COURIC: You've cited Alaska's proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. What did you mean by that? It's gotten sad.
PALIN: That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land- boundary that we have with- Canada. It- it's funny that a comment like that was- kind of made to- cari- I don't know, you know? Reporters-...
COURIC: Mocked?
PALIN: Yeah, mocked, I guess that's the word, yeah. Um...

Has this actually aired yet? It's almost painful to watch.

Any esprit d'escalier yet, Sarah?

Ha! I hate it when that happens. Luckily Couric is scheduled to interview her again on the campaign trail next week, so Sarah will get another shot to drop her comebacker. But oh no, what if the campaign is still suspended then? Sarah will never get her second chance!

I can't believe that McCain's advisers allow her to continue to make this claim.

Man, did Couric do her a favor by helping her with "mocked". At that point, just before Couric reframed the question and gave her a chance to breathe, it looked like all of the cramming Palin's been doing was going to bottleneck in her brain the way mine did whenever I walked into an inorganic chemistry exam room.
For the country's sake I hope it was a bottleneck. I hope her inability to summon what should have been a well-coached pat answer was the result of that answer being stuck, synaptically speaking, behind the names of Saakashvili and Medvedev and whatever mnemonic device she's been using to remember the current membership of NATO. If she simply did not have an answer at the ready for that question, we are indeed in deep do-do. Duh.

This is hilarious! I didn't know that Katie Kouric was guest hosting Saturday Night Live this week. Tina Fey's impersonation of Sarah Palin is spot on. She's taken it a bit too far this time though: Palin can't be that idiotic in real life.

I have no mercy I guess. There is a chance she could be sitting in the White House. Seriously, Bush won twice and we have racism to contend with. I have no sympathy for Sarah Palin whatsoever. Tell it to the people she fired or charged for rape kits.

Look, it was a momentary and regrettable pang (the sympathy, that is). I felt it. I can't pretend it didn't happen. But you'll be reassured to know that I'm back in full-on contempt mode now. And I don't think I'll let that happen again.
